或许有点讽刺，越阴暗的东西，总是越吸引人；
第一次听到Billie Holliday的时候，感觉就像触电

然后，会像村上春树在《爵士群像》中写的那个美国大兵那样：“为我播那张Billie Holiday的专辑，哪张都行，只要是Billie Holiday……”

在她的自传《Lady Sings The Blues》中，Billie毫不避讳地承认，自己是名私生女；14岁时，又被㊟㊟；为了生计，她后来去纽约当雏妓； 并在一片灯红酒绿中，认识了Louis Armstrong和Bessie ㊟㊟ith的爵士

去听《God Bless the Child》，Billie诚挚希望天下的孩子，都能平安长大歌词更教导孩子对物质生活的观念。Billie在歌曲中，将自己悲苦的往事化为音乐；由反而正，歌诵人性正面价值；因为，“她是那样地相信，一枝草一点露，只要活着就必须抱着希望走下去。”

特别喜欢那首《My Sweet Hunk O' Trash》，那是Billie和Louis Armstrong的合作，《甜蜜的坏东西》

“You are just a good for nothing，But my sweet hunk O’trash”

小时候的Billie，就已经十分喜欢Louis Armstrong的音乐；年岁的增长，也没有消磨Uncle Sachmo爱逗乐的天性；加上此时的Billie依然拥有一个漂亮的嗓音；时间和空间上的登对，也造就了这首爵士乐坛的经典

Billie有很可怕的择偶眼光：她总是爱上会殴打她的男人。或者说，她就像“精准的雷达”，凡是垃圾的男人，她都没办法不爱——去听《I must have that man》

“He treats me awful，Each time that we meet，It's just unlawful，How that boy can cheat，But I must have that man”

当然，Billie的情歌，并非总是那么灰色；就好像，她从来不是一个成功的爵士蓝调歌手；但是，她呈现给大众的，却是一个惊人的音乐个性——“Free, yes it’s Jazz!”

《A fine romance》就是很好的例子。和Louis/Ella版本的火花四射相比，Billie Holiday的演绎，和歌词更为贴切，就像是在调侃爱情

或许，不是因为Lady Day，我不会听Vocal Jazz——Ella Fitzgeral的技巧曾经打动过我，我还把她称为Vocal Jazz世界里的莫扎特；但是，真正、牢牢抓住我的却是Billie；甚至喜欢看照片上，Billie抽烟的样子——风尘味十足的“缎衣淑女”

或许，Billie就是那颗《Strange Fruit》

Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
木兰花香，甜美而新鲜
Then the sudden ㊟㊟ell of burning flesh.
然后，突然传来阵阵尸肉焚烧的气味

演唱这首歌时，所有的灯光全部熄灭；侍者不许走动、递送饮品或者点餐；现场只留一盏小灯，微弱地照着Billie Holiday的脸庞；曲毕, 无论观众如何疯狂鼓掌；Billie Holiday从不响应，也不谢幕——兀自走入后台
